LADY KNIGHTS SCORE TWO GOALS IN FINAL 10 MINUTES

On Senior Day the Lady Knights welcomed the Lady Hurricanes of Cape Fear Academy to The Castle Grounds for an important CFIC contest. Led by seniors Lana Cox, Courtney Jackson, Abbey McCormick, and Rebekah Morrison, the Lady Knights refused to lose and secured a victory by scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes provided. All four seniors provided solid leadership in a determined effort by the Lady Knights. Cape Fear took a 1-0 lead with 11:28 remaining in the first half, when a corner kick was not successfully cleared, and junior Holly Norris scored by driving the ball over junior goalkeeper's Jessica Beasley's head at the near post. Finally, after more than 70 minutes of frustration and an inability to find the back of the net, junior forward Jennifer Beasley drilled a hard shot from the top of the penalty area that caromed off the post and into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 9:36 remaining. Even though a tie would have guaranteed a second place finish in the CFIC, Village did not want to play overtime, as they had in their previous game with the Lady Hurricanes, and junior striker Maryssa Dyer made sure that regulation would provide sufficient time to decide the game. With just 1:09 left, she drove an intercepted pass from the edge of the penalty area just inside the far post for the game-winning goal. Game balls were awarded to the four seniors along with Jennifer Beasley and Dyer for their outstanding play. With the 2-1 win Village clinches at least a second place finish in the CFIC with two games remaining in their regular season, both of which are conference games. The win improves the Lady Knights record to 8-3-2, 4-1-1.

In the Junior Varsity game the Lady Knights tightened their hold on first place with a 3-0 victory and improved their undefeated conference record to 4-0-2.

The goal was scored with less than 3 minutes remaining in the first 10 minute overtime when eighth grade forward Vicki Mattias crossed the ball from the right side of the penalty area onto the head of junior striker Jennifer Beasley at the far post. Beasley drove it into the back of the net for the game's only goal. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Beasley earned her second consecutive shutout and her sixth on the season. BASEBALL TRAVELS TO ROCKY MOUNT

The Knights baseball team suffered their first loss today in a game played at Benny Alexander Field in Rocky Mount. The fell to Rocky Mount Academy 7-3.

Village took advantage of RMA starting pitcher Lee Whitley's early wildness to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Freshman Obie Noble opened the game with a walk, and after a force out left sophomore Kyle Moser on first, junior David Powell and senior Austin Everette walked to load the bases. Sophomore Tim Zimmerman's RBI on an infield out plated Moser with the games first run.  VCA struck again in the second for two more runs. Sophomore Zack Russell reached on an error, and freshman Brock Rafferty followed with a single to left. After senior Adam Spena’s sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, Noble followed with a ground ball to third that was mishandled, allowing Russell to score, and the RMA catcher threw the ball into left field trying to nail Flaherty, which allowed him to score. Obie Noble held the Eagles in check until the fourth, allowing only one hit. In the fourth RMA closed to within one, as the Knights entered the fifth leading 3-2. After holding Village scoreless in the top of the inning, RMA took the lead in the fifth. After the first two batters were retired, the Eagles plated 3 runs to take the lead, 5-3. They added 2 more in the sixth to build a 7-3 lead.

VCA threatened in the top of the seventh as RMA relief pitcher Tanner Brake walked Noble and Moser. Two outs later Zimmerman singled to center to load the bases, but the Knights were unable to score. Tanner Brake got the win on the mound or RMA pitching the final three innings in relief while Noble took the loss for VCA. Offensively Village was led by Rafferty, who went 2-3.

GIRLS SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH 4-0 VICTORY

The Lady Knights opened the 2008 season on The Castle Grounds in fine fashion as they defeated the Greenfield School 4-0. Greenfield was last year's NCISAA 1A State Runner-up. This was the fist time Greenfield traveled to Village for a girls soccer match.

The Lady Knights came out with an energetic attack which produced 18 first half shots, but the game remained scoreless until junior Maryssa Dyer intercepted a Greenfield defender's pass and put home a hard shot from the left side of the penalty area with 5:10 remaining in the half.

The second half featured outstanding team defense, which held the visitors to just 2 shots for the game, and helped junior goalkeeper Jessica Beasley to the shutout.

Dyer added two more unassisted goals in the second half and fellow junior Jennifer Beasley broke free on the right side to score with 42 seconds remaining. Both Dyer and Jennifer Beasley earned game balls.

Game balls were also awarded to 8th grade attacker Vicki Mattias, for recording 6 shots and aggressively attacking the goal, and to senior Courtney Jackson, who successfully transitioned to left back from her previous role as a midfielder and helped stop Greenfield's all-state striker, Azlynn Aycock, who was prevented from taking any shots.

Village also won the JV contest as 7th grader Heather Akers scored a first-half goal, and in her first game in goal, 8th grader Rachel Daum recorded a shutout.

Knights Reach Final Four in NCISAA 2A Tournament
(See Bracket Below)

Fan support was a factor as for the first time in VCA history our Boys Basketball Team reached the NCISAA 2A Semi-Finals. In a game in which neither team led by more than 5 points in regulation, the Knights secured an 8-point victory in overtime, defeating the #4 High Point Christian Academy Cougars, 71-63. The Knights had several chances to secure the victory at the end of the fourth quarter, but allowed High Point to remain close by failing to convert free throws. With just 20 seconds remaining the tenacious Cougars tied the game at 52, and when a last second jumper by Tyree Graham bounced off the rim, the teams headed into overtime. The Knights took charge quickly in OT as Antonio Kalpic won the tip, sending it to Tyree Graham, who drove to the basket for a lay-up. After a defensive stop, Tyree scored again, and the Knights never relinquished the lead. Village tightened its defense and made its free throws to close out the victory. The Knights next game is Friday, February 22 at North Raleigh Christian Academy at 5:30 PM vs. #1 seed Calvary Baptist Day School. Like High Point, Calvary defeated the Knights during the regular season, but the team is confident that they can duplicate another change in outcome.

Knights Basketball Featured on NCISAA Web Site

Village Christian Academy traveled to Rocky Mount, NC today, and their games against Rocky Mount Academy were featured on the NCISAA web site. Below is a copy of the informative article.

Senior point guard Elaine Holland scored 25 points to lead Rocky Mount Academy girls to a 49-46 upset of 6th ranked Village Christian in a match-up of CFIC and EPIC embers. In boys action Village Christian Prevailed by a 70-58 score. Holland's hot hand in the final period was a key as she had 12 points including a perfect six or six from the foul line. Village Christian was again without the services of South Florida signee Tawatha Tucker and guard Maryssa Dyer, but this was still a monumental win for a rebuilding RMA girls program under Coach Ronnie Beddingfield.

RMA's Catherine Hood (21) looks to the hoop in last night's game while Kristen Schmitt (32) and Gray Davenport (5) position for the rebound. Defending are VCA's Allie Patrick (10) and Angel Fuller (32).

In the girl's contest neither team's offense could get cranked in the opening period. RMA's Catherine Hood had a pair of put-backs to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead, but a field goal by the Lady Knights Allie Patrick, along with a pair of free throws by Jaime Jordan, left the score deadlocked 6-6 at period's end.

The second quarter saw Holland and teammate Kristen Schmitt go to work for the Eagles. Holland hit a quick field goal and seconds later had a steal and basket to give the Eagles a 10-6 lead. Schmitt and Holland then combined to score the the next 11 RMA points as the Eagles vaulted to a 21-12 lead with 1:29 to go in the half, but VCA's Jaime Jordan and Abby Strickland nailed back to back treys and Li'Esa Barnett hit a pair of baskets to cut the lead; however, the Eagles still had a 23-22 lead at the half. In the third period VCA came out in a man-man full court press that presented problems for the Eagles and forcing them to turn the ball over eight times. RMA's Schmitt hit a pair of baskets early to go along with Hood's follow shot that gave the Eagles a 29-24 advantage; however, Angel Fuller's baseline jumper and back to back hoops by Chatham McTindal gave the Lady Knights their 1st lead at 30-29 with 2:37 to play in the quarter. Holland's steal and lay-up and a field goal by RMA reserve Amelia Nash put the Eagles back on top at 33-30 before VCA's Li'Esa Barnett's field goal and old-fashioned three-point play boosted the Lady Knights to a 35-33 lead at the end of the stanza.

The fourth quarter saw the lead seesaw back and forth. The Eagles grabbed a three point advantage at 39-36 on a Hood follow shot and a pair of free throws by Holland. VCA rallied to take the lead, 42-41 with 3:53 remaining, on two Shaye Fuller field goals and a pair of free tosses by Angel Fuller, but this would be the Lady Knight's last lead of the contest as Holland took over by scoring the last eight points of the game for RMA and going six for six at the foul line down the stretch.

Elaine Holland with 25 points was the game's leading scorer while Kristen Schmitt added 14 to the cause. Li'Esa Barnett paced Village Christian with 13. RMA held a 31-26 rebounding advantage with Catherine Hood pulling down 15 including several that came at crucial times. Shaye Fuller and Angel Fuller had nine and seven respectively for Village Christian.

Village Christian's 6'9" center Antonio Kalpic skies to the basket in last night's game. Looking on are teammates Tremayne Langford (22), Shawn Graham (23) and Tyree Graham(24). Rocky Mount defenders are Edmund Gravely (40), Micah Baines (22) and M. J. Evans (23).

In the boys contest RMA jumped to an early 8-2 advantage on treys by Micah Baines and Hobbs Johnson sandwiched around a Baines' snowbird but the lead was short-lived as Shawn Graham found the hot hand early nailing three trifectas among his 13 1st period points. Texas Tech signee Tyree Graham's jumper gave the Knight's an early ten point lead at 20-10 before Baines hit three straight baskets and M. J. Evans' baseline jumper cut the deficit to 22-18 at the end of the quarter. The second period saw Village lead throughout the stanza but were not able to put the Eagles away. Edmund Gravely's follow shot and a Micah Baines field goal brought RMA within two at 20-28 with 1:45 remaining in the half but Tyree Graham then scored six straight points on a pair of field goals and free throws to give the Knights a 36-28 halftime cushion.

In the third period Fabian Guzman, VCA's normal starter at point guard, who was battling the flu bug, came off the bench to nail back to back threes to stake the Knights to a ten point lead at 46-36. The Eagles fought back cutting the lead to 53-47 on Tanner Brake's three point play and a jumper by Lee Fulcher, but a pair of Tremayne Langford buckets kept the Knights in front 57-47 at the period's conclusion.

After Tyree Graham hit a few throw to open the final stanza and RMA's Micah Baines hit a lay-up, VCA went to a spread offense in an effort to run time off the clock leading 58-49. The attempt was successful as they ran the clock down to the 4:14 mark before Tyree Graham hit a baseline jumper. B Baines answered with a three to cut the lead to 60-52 at the 2:37 mark. RMA was forced to foul the remainder of the way, and VCA hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Shawn Graham led the Knight's scoring attack with 19 points and Tyree Graham and 6'5" power forward Adam Spena added 15 and 12 respectively. T. Graham, who has committed to Texas Tech to play for Bobby Knight, also was a factor with his floor game with several pinpoint passes as well as directing the Knight offense in the absence of Guzman. RMA was led by Micah Baines who had a game high 25 points and Edmund Gravely chipped in ten. Baines, who came into the game averaging over 28 ppg got his points the hard way as VCA's Tremayne Langford did a good job of contesting basically every shot he put up. The Knights held a 38-28 rebounding edge with Tyree Graham snaring nine and Shawn Graham, Adam Spena and Antonio Kalpic grabbing eight apiece. Bravely had eight caroms for RMA and Baines chipped in with seven.

Eligible students are men and women entering their senior year of high school who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one of 33 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools. Students are judged on their academic achievements, community and school service and athletic accomplishments.

The program was created in 1994, with more than 6,200 nominations submitted in the first year from high schools nationwide. Since then, more than 150,000 students have been nominated and 26 have joined the prestigious Heisman family.

Each of these student athletes will now compete on the state level and if successful on the state level (one male and one female winner from each state) move on to the national competition. The national winner receives a $10,000 award for their school and is recognized during the college Heisman Trophy celebration in
